Why There Are Two Retail Mounts

A removable mount needs to match the surface that actually supports it. “Vehicle mount” is not one universal category.

The magnetic mount and suction cup mount use different attachment principles. One depends on magnetic attraction to a suitable metal panel. The other depends on a complete suction seal against a compatible smooth surface. A roof that fails one test does not automatically pass the other.

The Magnetic Mount: Start With the Exact Metal

The magnetic retail mount is intended for suitable, sufficiently flat magnetic metal surfaces. Common examples can include compatible steel vehicle roofs, hoods or other exterior steel panels.

“Metal” is not enough. Aluminum is metal, but it does not provide the ferromagnetic surface required by this mounting method. Fiberglass RV roofs, panoramic glass, plastic trim and composite body panels are also unsuitable for direct magnetic attachment.

Before ordering, place a small household magnet on the exact area where the mount would sit. Do not test a door and assume the roof uses the same material. The magnet should hold firmly at the intended location, and the area should be flat enough for the mounting points to sit correctly without bridging deep channels, seams or strong curves.

The mount is removable and does not require drilling. When correctly installed on a compatible surface and checked before use, it supports vehicle travel, including highway-driving scenarios. That is not a universal maximum-speed guarantee. Vehicle geometry, surface condition, weather, installation quality and cable routing all affect the complete setup.

A transparent surface is not automatically a suitable surface. Every suction cup needs full, uninterrupted contact. The installation area must be clean, dry, smooth, non-porous and sufficiently flat.

Avoid seals, trim edges, frit bands, tint-film edges, gaps and strongly curved sections. Dust, moisture, wax, grease or surface texture can prevent a complete seal.

For an interior installation, the mounting position must also stay clear of the driver’s view, airbags, controls, emergency exits and moving sunroof components. Glass coatings, tint and surrounding vehicle structure can affect Starlink performance even when the terminal has a visible view of the sky, so the actual position should be tested before relying on it.
