A sample can be convincing.
The surface looks clean. The bracket feels solid. The packaging arrives without damage. The supplier answers quickly and offers an attractive price.
Then the bulk order arrives.
A screw has changed. The magnet coating is different. The suction cups feel softer than the approved sample. The instruction card is missing. The cartons are larger than quoted. A product photograph shows one configuration while the delivered units use another.
None of these problems is unusual in accessory sourcing. Most of them are also preventable.
The purpose of supplier qualification is not to find a supplier who says yes to every request. It is to find one who can define the product clearly, repeat it consistently, explain where it should not be used, and respond properly when something goes wrong.
That matters especially for Starlink Mini-compatible mounts.
Starlink’s own Mini accessory range separates flat, pipe, roof-rack, mobility and other mounting applications. Its current roof-rack mount also has defined bar dimensions and is not intended for round-profile bars. The lesson for third-party sourcing is straightforward: a mounting product must have a clearly defined application. “Fits vehicles” is not a technical specification.
Before placing a bulk order, ask the supplier the following twelve questions.
1. Which exact terminal and mounting application is this product designed for?
Do not accept “for Starlink” as a complete answer.
Ask the supplier to identify:
- the terminal model;
- the mounting interface;
- the product revision;
- the intended mounting surface;
- the intended installation style;
- whether the product is temporary, removable, fixed or mobile-use hardware.
For Starlink Mini-compatible products, the supplier should be able to provide photographs showing the actual terminal installed in the mount.
They should also provide the dimensions of the terminal contact points, mounting holes, clips, rails or locking features that determine compatibility.
If the supplier sells one bracket for several Starlink generations, ask how the different dimensions are accommodated. A vague statement such as “universal design” should be followed by drawings, installation photographs or a clear parts list.
A good supplier can explain both what the product fits and what it does not fit.
2. What surfaces and use cases should not be recommended?
This question often reveals more than the product presentation.
A supplier who understands the product should be able to name unsuitable applications without hesitation.
For a magnetic mount, exclusions may include:
- aluminium;
- fibreglass;
- glass;
- plastic;
- heavily curved steel;
- ribbed or uneven panels;
- surfaces too small for full base contact.
For a suction cup mount, exclusions may include:
- rough or textured panels;
- porous surfaces;
- flexible roof membranes;
- dirty or wet surfaces;
- heavily curved glass;
- positions crossing rubber seals or raised trim.
The supplier should also distinguish temporary parked use from permanent or in-motion installation.
Do not rely on marketing language such as:
- “works on all vehicles”;
- “suitable for any roof”;
- “windproof at any speed”;
- “universal RV mount.”
Broad claims may make a listing easier to write. They also make returns and customer disputes more likely.
3. What materials are used in every important component?
“Metal and plastic” is not a material specification.
Ask for a component-level material list covering:
- main bracket or frame;
- fasteners;
- magnets;
- magnet coating or protective layer;
- suction cups;
- rubber contact pads;
- adjustment knobs;
- locking parts;
- cable clips;
- surface finish;
- packaging inserts.
For metal parts, ask about material grade, thickness and finish.
For suction cups and rubber parts, ask about the material type and whether the supplier controls hardness or formulation between production batches.
For magnets, ask:
- the magnet type;
- number of magnets;
- dimensions;
- coating;
- how the magnets are retained inside the product;
- whether the customer-facing surface has a protective pad.
The goal is not to collect technical words for the product page.
The goal is to know which components affect durability, surface protection and batch consistency.
4. How were holding force and product stability evaluated?
A single number is not enough.
A supplier may say the mount has a holding force of 50 kg, 100 kg or more. Before using that figure in marketing material, ask how it was obtained.
The test description should include:
- test surface;
- surface thickness;
- test direction;
- load direction;
- temperature;
- duration;
- whether the force was static or dynamic;
- whether the test measured one component or the complete assembled mount;
- whether the result came from internal testing or an independent laboratory.
Magnetic pull force measured vertically from a thick laboratory steel plate is not the same as real performance on a curved, painted vehicle roof.
A suction cup test on clean laboratory glass does not describe performance on dusty, coated or curved automotive glass.
Ask for the method before accepting the result.
If the supplier cannot explain the test conditions, do not publish the number as a product guarantee.
5. Can the supplier provide an approved reference sample?
Before bulk production, establish one physical sample as the approved reference.
This is sometimes called:
- a golden sample;
- an approved sample;
- a master sample;
- a production reference sample.
The approved sample should define:
- dimensions;
- material;
- finish;
- color;
- hardware;
- assembly;
- logo position;
- instruction content;
- retail packaging;
- carton configuration.
Photographs are useful, but they are not enough on their own.
Keep one approved sample with the buyer and, where possible, one signed or labelled reference sample with the supplier.
The purchase order should state that bulk production must match the approved reference unless a change has been accepted in writing.
This protects both sides from later arguments about what was originally approved.
6. How does the supplier control changes between the sample and bulk production?
A sample may be handmade or produced from a small pilot batch.
Bulk production introduces different pressures:
- faster assembly;
- alternative component sources;
- different packaging materials;
- larger production teams;
- stock shortages;
- cost-saving substitutions.
Ask the supplier what can change without customer approval.
The correct answer should be very little.
Require written notification before changes to:
- material;
- magnet;
- suction cup;
- coating;
- fastener;
- adhesive;
- contact pad;
- dimensions;
- packaging;
- instruction sheet;
- production location.
Even a small component substitution can affect fit, appearance or customer experience.
A supplier who says “the function will remain the same” should still provide the proposed change for review.
7. What quality-control checks are performed during production?
“100% inspection” sounds reassuring, but it does not explain what is inspected.
Ask for the actual inspection points.
A useful quality plan may include:
Incoming material checks
- metal dimensions and finish;
- magnet dimensions or grade verification;
- suction cup appearance and hardness consistency;
- fastener dimensions;
- packaging material condition.
In-process checks
- hole position;
- assembly orientation;
- torque or fastening condition;
- magnet retention;
- suction cup installation;
- moving-part function;
- logo placement.
Final checks
- complete parts count;
- installation fit;
- surface finish;
- sharp edges or burrs;
- adjustment function;
- packaging contents;
- carton labels.
The supplier should also explain the sampling method.
For critical fit or safety-related features, a higher inspection level may be appropriate than for minor cosmetic details.
Do not ask only whether QC exists.
Ask what a rejected unit looks like and what happens to it.
8. Can each batch be traced?
Traceability becomes important only after a problem appears.
By then, it is too late to create it.
Ask whether the supplier can identify:
- production date;
- production batch;
- assembly line or team;
- material lot;
- packaging version;
- inspection record;
- shipment carton.
A simple batch code on the product, label or instruction card can be enough for many accessories.
Without traceability, one complaint can create uncertainty across the entire inventory. The reseller may not know whether the issue affects one unit, one carton or every shipment received that year.
Traceability also makes replacement and corrective action more efficient.
9. What exactly is included in the retail box and export carton?
Many bulk-order disputes begin with packaging assumptions.
Ask for a written packing list covering:
- main mount;
- screws;
- washers;
- knobs;
- tools;
- protective pads;
- cable clips;
- instruction card;
- warning label;
- spare parts;
- retail box;
- inner carton;
- master carton.
Then request:
- retail-box dimensions;
- unit gross weight;
- carton quantity;
- master-carton dimensions;
- master-carton gross and net weight;
- carton markings;
- pallet information, if applicable.
These figures affect:
- freight cost;
- warehouse planning;
- fulfillment fees;
- marketplace storage fees;
- distributor margins;
- product-page accuracy.
Ask the supplier to pack the sample in the proposed production packaging.
A good product in weak packaging is still a poor export product.
10. What installation instructions and warning content will be supplied?
Instructions are part of the product.
For a mount that depends on surface compatibility, the instruction card should cover more than assembly.
It should explain:
- suitable surfaces;
- unsuitable surfaces;
- how to check the mounting area;
- surface cleaning;
- correct installation;
- full-contact requirements;
- inspection before use;
- removal procedure;
- parked-use limitations where applicable;
- need to confirm clear sky through the Starlink App;
- product compatibility;
- manufacturer and reseller contact details, where required.
Images are particularly useful.
A close-up showing correct full contact can prevent more mistakes than several paragraphs of general text.
Ask whether the supplier can provide:
- editable instruction files;
- local-language versions;
- reseller branding;
- QR codes linking to videos;
- updated files when the product changes.
Do not wait until the cartons are being sealed to begin writing the instructions.
11. How will defects, spare parts and warranty cases be handled?
A supplier’s after-sales process should be agreed before the first complaint.
Ask:
- What is considered a manufacturing defect?
- What evidence is required?
- Is a photograph enough?
- Does the supplier require the product to be returned?
- Will defective units be credited, replaced or included in the next shipment?
- How quickly will the supplier respond?
- Are replacement suction cups, screws, knobs or pads available separately?
- What defect-rate threshold triggers corrective action?
- Who pays freight for replacement parts?
Small spare parts can prevent the replacement of an entire product.
For example, a reseller may be able to resolve a customer case quickly by replacing a knob, fastener or suction cup rather than shipping a complete new mount.
Ask for the spare-parts policy as part of the quotation.
12. What support is available beyond manufacturing?
For a distributor or online seller, the physical product is only one part of the launch.
Ask whether the supplier can provide:
- white-background images;
- lifestyle photographs;
- dimension drawings;
- installation photographs;
- short videos;
- product specifications;
- surface-comparison graphics;
- FAQs;
- packaging templates;
- barcodes or labels;
- localized copy;
- basic customer-use analysis;
- OEM logo support.
The supplier should also be able to answer technical and sales questions after the order is placed.
A slightly lower unit price may not compensate for weeks spent creating missing materials, correcting inaccurate descriptions or repeatedly asking for basic information.
Build a Bulk Order Readiness File
Before approval, organize the supplier’s information into one file.
The file should contain five sections.
Section A: Product identity
- product name and code;
- compatible terminal;
- revision number;
- drawings;
- dimensions;
- weight;
- parts list;
- approved sample photographs.
Section B: Application boundaries
- suitable surfaces;
- unsuitable surfaces;
- temporary or permanent use;
- parked or mobile use;
- installation requirements;
- warnings;
- test methods and results.
Section C: Production control
- material specification;
- approved suppliers or component standards;
- QC plan;
- traceability method;
- change-control agreement;
- approved reference sample.
Section D: Packaging and logistics
- retail packing list;
- unit dimensions and weight;
- carton quantity;
- carton dimensions and weight;
- labels;
- lead time;
- shipping terms.
Section E: Commercial support
- MOQ;
- sample cost;
- tooling or customization cost;
- payment terms;
- warranty;
- spare parts;
- marketing materials;
- OEM options;
- contact and escalation process.
If several important sections remain incomplete, the product is not ready for a large order regardless of price.
Use a 100-point supplier scorecard
A simple scoring system makes supplier comparisons more objective.

Suggested interpretation
85–100: Strong bulk-order candidate
Documentation is clear, samples are consistent, and commercial execution appears reliable.
70–84: Conditional approval
Suitable for a controlled opening order, but identified gaps should be closed before scaling.
55–69: Sample or pilot order only
The product may be promising, but evidence and process controls are incomplete.
Below 55: High sourcing risk
Do not place a meaningful bulk order until major problems are resolved.
Price should be evaluated after the basic qualification score, not before it.
A low quotation from a poorly documented supplier is not automatically a lower-cost purchase.
Validate the sample under your customers’ conditions
Do not test the sample only on an office desk.
Build a small application test plan based on the reseller’s likely customers.
For a magnetic mount, this may include:
- flat vehicle steel;
- slightly curved steel;
- painted steel;
- repeated installation and removal;
- inspection of the contact pad;
- confirmation that the terminal fits securely.
For a suction cup mount, this may include:
- clean vehicle glass;
- different glass positions;
- repeated installation and removal;
- inspection near—but not on—curved edges;
- checking whether cups remain fully seated during the intended stationary-use period.
Record:
- surface;
- temperature;
- installation method;
- duration;
- photographs;
- observations;
- any loosening or movement;
- surface marks;
- component wear.
The purpose is not to create a universal performance guarantee.
It is to decide whether the product fits the buyer’s real market and instructions.
Compare the first bulk shipment with the approved sample
When the order arrives, do not assume approval is complete because the cartons look correct.
Select units from different cartons and compare them with the approved reference sample.
Check:
- dimensions;
- weight;
- finish;
- hardware;
- moving parts;
- magnet or suction components;
- terminal fit;
- logo;
- instructions;
- packaging;
- carton quantity.
Photograph the inspection.
If something has changed, pause distribution until the change is understood.
It is much easier to resolve a difference before products have been shipped to individual customers.
Supplier red flags
Be cautious when a supplier:
- cannot identify the exact terminal version;
- uses “universal” without measurements;
- refuses to name unsuitable surfaces;
- provides holding-force claims without a test method;
- changes materials after sample approval;
- cannot provide carton dimensions;
- has no written QC checkpoints;
- cannot trace production batches;
- offers OEM packaging before confirming product compatibility;
- promises every customization without discussing MOQ or lead time;
- cannot provide installation instructions;
- avoids explaining defect handling.
One red flag may be fixable.
Several together usually indicate that the buyer will carry most of the risk after shipment.
The practical purchasing rule
Do not place a bulk order because the sample looks good and the quotation is attractive.
Place it when four things are clear:
- The supplier can define exactly where the product should and should not be used.
- The approved sample is documented well enough to be reproduced.
- The production and inspection process can detect meaningful variation.
- Packaging, delivery and after-sales responsibilities are agreed in writing.
A reliable supplier does not only manufacture the product.
They help the buyer understand it, sell it correctly and resolve problems when the real market begins testing it.
