A customer says, “I need a Starlink Mini mount for my RV.”
That sounds like a straightforward sales enquiry.
It is not.
An RV may have a steel cab roof, an aluminium body, a fibreglass living section, a rubber roof membrane and a glass skylight. Recommending a product from the word “RV” alone is little more than guessing.
The same problem appears with trucks, vans, boats and overlanding vehicles. The vehicle category gives useful context, but it does not tell the reseller what the mount will attach to, whether the surface is flat, or whether the customer expects to remove the equipment before driving.
A better sales process qualifies the mounting point before recommending the mount.
For resellers, distributors and installers, this can be done in five minutes.
The Five-Minute Mount Check
A salesperson does not need to become a vehicle engineer.
They do need five clear answers.
1. Where exactly will the mount be placed?
Ask for the specific location.
“On the roof” is not specific enough.
The customer may mean:
- the steel cab roof;
- an aluminium canopy;
- a panoramic sunroof;
- a fibreglass camper shell;
- a side window;
- a roof-rack bar;
- the roof of the living section of an RV.
Whenever possible, ask for one wide photograph of the vehicle and one close-up of the intended mounting area.
A photograph often resolves more than several messages about the vehicle model.
2. What is the surface made from?
This is the main dividing line between the two products.
A magnetic mount requires a suitable ferrous-steel surface. It does not attach properly to aluminium, fibreglass, glass or plastic.
A suction cup mount requires a clean, smooth and non-porous surface. Glass is the clearest example. Rough fibreglass, textured paint, rubber roof membranes and uneven panels should not be treated as equivalent surfaces.
When the customer is unsure whether a panel is steel, ask them to test the exact mounting area with a small household magnet.
Do not ask them to test the vehicle door and assume the roof is the same material. Different parts of one vehicle may use different materials.
3. Is the surface flat enough for full contact?
Correct material does not guarantee correct fit.
A steel roof can still have ribs, channels, seams or curvature that prevent a magnetic base from sitting fully on the panel.
Glass can have curved edges, printed borders, rubber seals or dimensions that leave one suction cup partly unsupported.
The whole mounting base matters.
If the product must bridge a ridge, rest on trim or sit partly on two different surfaces, the location is not ready for a recommendation.
4. Will the equipment be used only while parked?
This question protects both the customer and the reseller.
Temporary magnetic and suction cup mounts are most naturally suited to removable, stationary setups where the equipment can be installed after parking and removed before departure.
A customer asking for permanent installation, daily road use or operation while the vehicle is moving is describing a different duty cycle.
Starlink’s current Mini Mobility Mount is mechanically secured with screws or bolts, while its Roof Rack and Rail Mount is designed around defined rack dimensions. Those official mounting structures should not be confused with removable temporary accessories.
When the customer says, “I want to leave it on all the time,” do not simply recommend the stronger-looking temporary product.
Move the enquiry into a structural-mounting discussion.
5. Does the proposed position have a usable sky view?
A correct surface can still be in the wrong location.
Roof boxes, solar panels, roof fans, rails, trees and nearby structures may affect the terminal’s view. Starlink’s setup guidance instructs users to check the proposed location and obstructions through the Starlink App.
The reseller does not need to guarantee performance from a customer photograph.
They should, however, remind the customer that mounting compatibility and satellite visibility are separate checks.
Four possible sales outcomes
After the five questions, every enquiry should fall into one of four outcomes.
Outcome 1: Recommend the magnetic mount
This is the clearest magnetic-mount customer:
- the exact surface has been confirmed as steel;
- the mounting area is flat enough for the full base;
- the customer wants temporary parked use;
- the location is accessible for installation and removal;
- the Starlink App indicates a workable position.
Typical examples may include:
- work vans with exposed steel roof sections;
- pickup trucks with flat steel cab roofs;
- temporary field-service vehicles;
- leased vehicles where the user does not want to drill;
- occasional road-trip users who remove the equipment before driving.
The sales explanation should remain simple:
This mount is intended for temporary use on a confirmed flat steel surface. Please test the exact mounting point with a magnet and remove the setup before driving.
That sentence is more useful than saying “fits most cars.”
Outcome 2: Recommend the suction cup mount
This is the clearest suction-cup customer:
- the intended surface is clean, smooth and non-porous;
- the cups can sit fully on the surface;
- the area is not heavily curved;
- the customer wants temporary parked use;
- the position does not interfere with doors, windows or visibility.
Typical examples may include:
- vehicles with a large glass sunroof;
- camper vans with suitable glass panels;
- RV users with a usable skylight or window;
- aluminium-body vehicles that still have an appropriate glass mounting location;
- short-term setups on smooth glass while parked.
The sales explanation could be:
This mount is intended for temporary use on clean, smooth glass or another suitable non-porous surface. Each suction cup must sit fully on the surface, away from seals and curved edges.
Avoid describing suction cups as the universal option for every non-magnetic roof.
They are not.
Outcome 3: Ask for more evidence before recommending
This is probably the most important category.
The customer may be suitable for one of the products, but the information is incomplete.
Common examples include:
- “My roof is metal.”
- “I have a camper.”
- “It is a fibreglass roof, but it feels smooth.”
- “There is a small glass section.”
- “I have an aluminium canopy with a steel rack.”
- “The mount will go somewhere near the solar panel.”
In these cases, the reseller should request:
- a close-up photograph;
- a wider roof photograph;
- a magnet test;
- approximate dimensions;
- confirmation of parked or mobile use;
- the intended cable route, where relevant.
This is not a lost sale.
It is a qualified sale in progress.
A customer who provides the requested information is also more likely to understand the product limits and install it correctly.
Outcome 4: Do not recommend either temporary mount
Some enquiries should not be converted into a magnetic or suction cup sale.
Examples include:
- permanent installation requests;
- operation while the vehicle is moving;
- rough or textured roof membranes;
- non-skid boat decks;
- round rails requiring a clamp;
- aluminium surfaces with no alternative steel or glass position;
- heavily curved glass;
- mounting points that block the driver’s view;
- surfaces too small for full mount contact;
- customers unwilling to remove the setup before driving.
In these cases, recommend a more appropriate structural, rack, rail, pipe, flat or vehicle-specific solution.

Saying “neither product is suitable for this location” can strengthen trust.
It shows that the reseller is qualifying the application rather than trying to force every enquiry into the available stock.
Customer type is still useful—after the surface check
Vehicle type should not decide the product, but it can help the salesperson anticipate the questions.
Standard cars and SUVs
These customers may have accessible steel roof sections or large glass sunroofs.
The main questions are:
- Is the exact roof section steel?
- Is the roof too curved?
- Is the sunroof large enough for full cup contact?
- Is the setup only for parked use?
Do not assume panoramic glass automatically makes suction mounting suitable. The edge, curvature and surrounding roof equipment still matter.
Pickup trucks
A pickup may contain several different mounting environments.
The cab roof may be steel. The canopy may be aluminium or fibreglass. A bed rack may need dedicated rack hardware.
Ask whether the customer means the cab, canopy or rack.
This single question can change the recommendation completely.
Work vans and commercial fleets
Work vans can be strong magnetic-mount candidates when they have exposed flat steel sections.
Fleet buyers may also value fast installation and removal without permanent vehicle changes.
However, roof ribs, ladders, light bars and storage systems can reduce usable space. For repeated or permanent operation, the enquiry may belong in a rack or structural-mount category instead.
Camper vans and RVs
These customers need the most qualification.
Do not recommend from the words “camper” or “RV.”
Request the roof material and intended mounting point. A steel cab may suit magnetic mounting while the living-area roof does not. A glass skylight may suit temporary suction mounting while the main membrane roof does not.
An RV can support several different recommendations depending on where the customer wants to install.
Overlanding vehicles
These vehicles often have roof racks, tents, solar panels, cargo boxes and aluminium canopies.
A small remaining patch of roof is not automatically a suitable mounting point.
The salesperson should ask for a full roof photograph and clarify whether the customer wants a quick parked setup or a permanent part of the vehicle build.
Boat owners
Boat enquiries should be handled cautiously.
Fibreglass and aluminium are common. Decks may be textured or wet. Stainless rails may not provide a suitable flat magnetic surface.
Glass may offer a temporary suction location while docked or anchored, but navigation, long-term marine exposure and repeated movement call for a more appropriate marine mounting method.
Use a four-code lead classification
For distributors handling multiple enquiries, record each lead using one of four simple codes.
M — Magnetic candidate
Confirmed steel, flat surface, temporary parked use.
S — Suction candidate
Confirmed smooth glass or suitable non-porous surface, temporary parked use.
Q — Qualification required
Missing photograph, material confirmation, dimensions or use-case details.
X — Alternative mounting required
Permanent, mobile, structural or incompatible-surface requirement.
This creates better sales data than simply recording “car,” “RV” or “van.”
After several weeks, the reseller can see:
- how many enquiries are truly magnetic candidates;
- how many need suction;
- how many customers do not understand their roof material;
- how much demand exists for rack or permanent mounting solutions;
- which questions should be added to the product pages.
The classification also supports future stock planning.
If most leads remain in Q because customers do not know the surface material, the immediate need may be better educational content rather than more inventory.
Product pages should qualify the customer before checkout
A product page should not rely on the customer reading a long installation article.
Place the main eligibility rule close to the purchase button.
For the magnetic mount:
For temporary parked use on a confirmed flat ferrous-steel surface.
For the suction cup mount:
For temporary parked use on clean, smooth and non-porous glass or another suitable surface.
Then include:
- a clear suitable-surface image;
- an unsuitable-surface image;
- a magnet-test instruction;
- a warning about seals, curves and texture;
- a parked-use statement;
- a request to contact the seller with a surface photograph when uncertain.
For online sellers, these elements perform part of the work that a salesperson would normally do in a store.
Avoid these sales claims
Several common phrases create unnecessary risk.
“Fits all cars”
No mount fits every roof material, roof shape and installation purpose.
“Works on any metal roof”
Aluminium is metal but is not a suitable magnetic surface.
“Works on all RVs”
RV construction varies too widely for that claim.
“Perfect for driving”
A temporary removable mount should not be described as a mobile structural installation.
“Suction works anywhere magnets do not”
Suction requires its own surface conditions. It is not the automatic second choice.
A more accurate message may sound less aggressive, but it attracts better-qualified buyers.
Turn customer questions into sales assets
Every repeated question should improve the next sale.
If customers repeatedly ask whether aluminium is magnetic, create a comparison image.
If RV users cannot identify their roof material, create a roof-material checklist.
If customers place suction cups partly on window seals, create a close-up installation photograph.
If buyers repeatedly ask about driving use, place the parked-use distinction near the top of the listing.
This is where customer service becomes marketing.
Useful answers reduce returns, improve product-page clarity and give search engines more original, practical content to understand. Google’s current guidance continues to emphasize unique, expert-led and people-first content rather than large volumes of commodity pages.
The practical sales rule
Do not recommend the mount from the vehicle name.
Recommend it from the mounting point and the duty cycle.
Choose a magnetic mount when the customer has confirmed flat steel and wants a temporary parked setup.
Choose a suction cup mount when the customer has suitable smooth glass or another clean non-porous surface and wants a temporary parked setup.
Request more evidence when the material, surface shape or location is uncertain.
Recommend another mounting method when the customer needs permanent, structural or mobile installation.
This process takes a few extra minutes.
It also gives the customer a much better chance of buying the right product the first time.
