Preventable Starlink Mini mount returns usually begin with an unanswered question: what is the exact surface at the intended contact points? A magnetic mount requires sufficiently flat ferrous magnetic metal. A suction mount requires a clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat, non-porous surface. Those tests come before an interior-versus-exterior label, and surface contact alone does not prove that the complete installation is suitable.
For resellers, the practical goal is to separate a selection mismatch from a genuine product or fulfillment defect before the order ships.
Separate preventable mismatches from genuine defects
Use six working categories:
- Surface mismatch: the selected product cannot attach correctly to the actual material or finish.
- Geometry mismatch: the material may be compatible, but curvature, ribs, seals, gaps or trim prevent full contact.
- Use mismatch: the requested application falls outside the way the product is presented, such as an exterior high-speed suction solution.
- Terminal mismatch: the customer does not have a compatible Starlink Mini terminal.
- Expectation mismatch: the customer expected different parts, packaging, dimensions or removal behavior.
- Product, packing or transit defect: a component is damaged, missing, incorrect or defective.
Do not combine the last category with “customer error.” Genuine defects need packing, fulfillment or supplier corrective action. The first five often improve through better qualification and clearer product information.
A seven-stage return-prevention loop
- Define eligibility beside the buying decision.
- Show suitable, uncertain and unsuitable surface examples.
- Ask the surface question first.
- Create a review path for uncertain buyers.
- Confirm higher-risk wholesale orders.
- Support the first installation and inspection.
- Code each return and improve the relevant stage.
1. Put the eligibility rule near the buying decision
For the Starlink Mini magnetic mount for vehicle surfaces, use language such as:
Compatible with Starlink Mini and intended for a sufficiently flat ferrous magnetic metal surface. Confirm the exact contact area with a magnet, check flatness and full contact, and plan the cable route before installation. The mount is designed for vehicle travel and driving when correctly installed on a compatible surface. SatHarbor does not publish a universal maximum vehicle speed.
Metal is not automatically magnetic. Aluminum, fiberglass, glass, plastic and non-magnetic panels are not compatible with this mounting method.
For the Starlink Mini suction cup mount for glass and smooth surfaces, use language such as:
Compatible with Starlink Mini and suitable for a clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat, non-porous contact surface. Check full suction-cup contact, curvature, seals, gaps, trim, vibration or movement, sky visibility, cable routing, nearby vehicle structure and environmental exposure. SatHarbor does not currently promote this product as an exterior high-speed driving solution.
Do not reduce this to “interior only,” and do not imply that every smooth exterior panel is a suitable installation location. Contact compatibility and complete-installation suitability are separate decisions.
2. Show suitable, uncertain and unsuitable conditions
Magnetic mount
- Suitable candidate: confirmed ferrous magnetic metal, enough flat area and full contact at every mounting point.
- Stop and check: unknown material, shallow curvature, roof ribs, seams, crowded roof hardware or limited cable-routing options.
- Not suitable: aluminum, fiberglass, glass, plastic, composite or any non-magnetic surface.
Suction mount
- Suitable candidate: clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat and non-porous glass or qualified smooth panel with full cup contact.
- Stop and check: curvature, frit bands, film edges, seals, gaps, narrow panels, moving trim, vibration, obstructed sky view or uncertain cable routing.
- Not suitable: rough, porous, dirty, wet, textured or strongly curved contact surfaces.
Use verified photographs of real surface conditions when available. A surface example is more useful than a generic “fits most vehicles” badge.
3. Ask one decisive question first
What is the exact material and condition of the surface where every contact point will sit?
Useful answer paths are:
- sufficiently flat ferrous magnetic metal;
- clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat, non-porous glass or panel;
- rough, porous, wet, textured or strongly curved surface;
- unknown material or uncertain geometry.
Only after that answer should support ask about vehicle movement, placement, sky visibility, cable routing and surrounding structure. If the buyer cannot identify the surface, send them to the mount finder or a manual review instead of forcing a product recommendation.
4. Create an amber path for uncertain customers
Ask for:
- one full photo showing the vehicle and intended area;
- one close-up showing the exact contact points, seams, trim and curvature;
- approximate usable dimensions;
- a magnet test on the exact area if magnetic mounting is being considered;
- confirmation that a suction surface is clean, dry, smooth, non-porous and sufficiently flat;
- whether the installation is for stationary use, vehicle travel or another operating condition;
- the planned sky view and cable route.
A practical support message is:
Please send one full vehicle photo and one close-up of the intended contact area. For magnetic mounting, test that exact area with a small magnet and confirm there is enough flat space for full contact. For suction mounting, show the surface curvature, seals, gaps and trim, and tell us how the vehicle will be used. We will check surface compatibility separately from placement, movement, sky view and cable routing.
The related customer qualification guide for resellers provides a reusable intake structure for this review.
5. Confirm higher-risk B2B orders before dispatch
Manual confirmation is most useful for first wholesale orders, larger quantities, mixed vehicle fleets, RV or specialty-body applications, incomplete surface information and requests that conflict with the published use boundary.
Record the buyer’s stated application in the quotation, order note or proforma invoice. Do not invent approval language: confirm only the facts the reseller and supplier have actually reviewed. For a mixed fleet, qualify representative vehicle and surface types rather than assuming one result applies to every unit.
6. Support the first installation
Magnetic-mount checklist
- Confirm the exact area is sufficiently flat ferrous magnetic metal.
- Inspect the full contact area for curvature, ribs, seams, debris and damage.
- Clean and dry the surface and the mount contact points.
- Seat the Starlink Mini and mount according to the product instructions.
- Confirm full, stable contact and inspect after any repositioning.
- Route and retain the cable so it cannot flap, drag, chafe or enter moving parts.
- Check sky visibility and surrounding obstructions.
- Inspect the complete installation before travel and during appropriate stops.
The magnetic mount is designed for vehicle travel and driving when correctly installed on a compatible surface, but SatHarbor does not publish a universal maximum vehicle speed. A service-plan or terminal statement should not be converted into a third-party mount speed rating.
Suction-mount checklist
- Confirm the contact surface is clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat and non-porous.
- Keep every cup clear of strong curvature, seals, gaps, trim and textured bands.
- Confirm full contact for every suction cup.
- Check vibration, vehicle movement and environmental exposure for the intended position.
- Keep the installation clear of driver sightlines, airbags and moving vehicle parts.
- Check sky visibility, cable routing and surrounding body structure.
- Inspect suction attachment after installation, repositioning and appropriate intervals.
A suitable contact surface does not by itself make the position appropriate for every use. The suction mount is compatible with qualified smooth, non-porous surfaces, but SatHarbor does not currently promote it as an exterior high-speed driving solution.
Neither mount improves or amplifies the Starlink signal. Placement and sky visibility still need to be evaluated separately.
7. Use return codes that identify the failed decision
| Code | Return reason | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| S1 | Non-magnetic surface selected for magnetic mount | Improve exact-area magnet-test guidance |
| S2 | Rough, porous, wet or textured suction surface | Improve surface-condition guidance |
| G1 | Curvature, seams, gaps or trim prevent full contact | Add geometry examples and photo review |
| U1 | Requested use exceeds the communicated boundary | Clarify intended-use screening before sale |
| M1 | Mount or cup not fully seated | Improve installation and inspection guidance |
| C1 | Wrong terminal or model | Improve Starlink Mini compatibility display |
| P1 | Missing or incorrect part | Review packing quality control |
| D1 | Product defect | Start supplier corrective action |
| T1 | Transit damage | Review packaging and carrier handling |
The code should point to the failed stage, not simply label the buyer. Review the codes by product and sales channel so repeated selection errors do not disappear inside a general “not suitable” category.
Create a one-page return-risk card
For the magnetic product, the first service question should be: “Have you tested the exact contact area with a magnet, and is it flat enough for full contact?”
For the suction product, ask: “Is the exact surface clean, dry, smooth, sufficiently flat and non-porous, with every cup clear of curvature, seals, gaps and trim?” Then separately confirm intended use, movement, sky visibility, cable routing and environmental exposure.
These questions should be consistent across the product page, marketplace listing, customer-service script, quotation and installation guide. The magnetic product is defined by compatible ferrous magnetic metal—not simply “outside.” The suction product is defined first by a qualified contact surface—not simply “inside.”
What to include in a wholesale return-prevention pack
- a magnetic-versus-suction surface decision sheet;
- verified suitable, uncertain and unsuitable surface photographs;
- a customer qualification form;
- current product specifications and installation instructions;
- editable product-page copy and FAQs;
- approved product images and accurate captions;
- a standard photo-request message;
- return-reason codes and escalation contacts.
Keep commercial terms such as MOQ, samples, packaging and private-label preparation in the B2B process, while directing retail buyers to the two current retail product pages.
The practical commercial rule
Help the buyer test the decision before the product leaves the warehouse. Recommend the magnetic mount only when the exact surface is sufficiently flat ferrous magnetic metal. Recommend the suction mount only when the exact surface meets the contact requirements and the complete placement passes the separate use checks. If neither path qualifies, say so rather than forcing a sale.
